Everyone worries and feels nervous or anxious from time to time – this is a perfectly normal human response to stressful situations. However, some people, experience worry and fear almost constantly, or have episodes of acute anxiety, panic or stress.
Physical discomfort
The body is the map of the mind and holds information about each person’s history. This happens because our bodies contain information about our reactions to life events, so how we are physically reflects our past and present emotional states.
Emotional trauma
During our life we all face challenges. Some people have had childhood experiences that still affect them. Others may experience trauma later in live in the form of illness, the death of a loved one, loss of employment or an important relationship, or even more acute forms of trauma such as accidents, exposure to acts of war or terrorism, assault, abuse, or other forms of brutality.
Relationship difficulties
We spend much of our time interacting with and therefore in relationship with each other, eg family members, friends, work colleagues, clients, social groups, etc. When we have disharmonious relationships with anyone it can have a lasting impact on us, however, when we have disharmonious relationships with someone close to us it can have a profound impact on our emotional well-being. Good news – therapy can help.
Depression
When you’re depressed, everything feels like a struggle. People experiencing depression describe struggling with difficult emotions such as sadness, guilt, pain and loss. But people commonly also describe struggling with the absence of feelings – a feeling of emptiness or numbness.
